Ms. Melodie Sue (Jewell) Phelps, of Monticello, Kentucky passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky having attained the age of 58 years, 2 months. She was born in Somerset, Kentucky on Thursday, November 29, 1963, the daughter of Edwin Ray and Nancy Lou (Crabtree) Jewell. She was a christian, member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, was a disc jockey starting with WFLW and then WKYM, she was a gifted writer and she loved this community with all her heart. She worked at the Wayne County Outlook for 35 years. She was editor for most of those years. She truly enjoyed getting to share stories about the people in our town. In February of last year, she got the opportunity to be part of a brand new newspaper. She was so excited about this new endeavor. She served as editor for the Wayne Weekly until her sudden passing. She In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Minnie Hunley Crabtree.
She is survived by her son, Michael Ray Phelps (& Tracie Brummett) of Monticello, Kentucky, siblings, Karen (& Jason) Hicks of Monticello, Kentucky, Sheila (& Mark) Hughes of Monticello, Kentucky, grandchildren, Parker Jane Brummett Phelps, Jackson Dean Brummett, along with several nieces and nephews, and many many friends.
The funeral service for Ms. Melodie Sue (Jewell) Phelps was conducted on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 12:00 noon in the Memory Chapel of New’s Monticello Funeral Home with Bro. Phillip Duncan and Bro. Gabe Denney officiating. Casket bearers were Stacey Duncan, Tom Prather, Tom Wesley, James Sloan, John Berry, Tyler Morrow. Burial was in the Elk Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to help pay for the final expenses, and may be left at the funeral home. New’s Monticello Funeral Home in Monticello, Kentucky was honored to be in charge of arrangements.
